At the Lake House

Let’s race some armchairs.

Strange things happen in the used sports car market. Cars which originally were built and sold for wildly different purposes are smashed into the same price range and get cross shopped. It is hard to imagine anyone looking at a Jaguar XK and a Honda S2000 in 2007 and having a hard time deciding which one was for them. One was a high priced luxury grand tourer and the other a no frills roadster that only came with a manual. And yet less than 10 years later they are priced nearly the same.

So the question: is a 987 actually !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ? Below I have a table similar to one I made at the very start of my search. A bunch of used sports cars all in upper twenty grand price range sorted roughly by how much performance your dollar will buy you. If all you care about is bang for your buck then a 987 is fairly middle of the pack. In terms of Horsepower per Ton per Grand the Corvette is the champ. Even using the exact same price for them all does not change the rankings. (I know this is not how power-to-weight is normally presented but I like it when bigger numbers are better).

Just about the only thing these cars have in common is rear wheel drive and being offered with leather seats and a convertible roof. There is no real reason to cross shop most of them other than wanting to “know where you stand”. So what would make the 987 a performance bargain? Well obviously power to weight is not everything and there is something to be said for handling. But for me it was how the car made me feel. I cannot claim to have driven all the cars I listed but I know that driving the boxster felt like an event, an experience. Something transformative, not only going fast but doing so with style. And not just being enjoyable blasting down back roads but just driving around town or going out for a date. Also I think it looks damn good.

What car upgrades driving to an event for you?

Where does the NA 996 place on this? You can get record supported former DD’s (aka, higher mileage) for under 15 grand. Seems like a bargain

Where the hell do you live that a 2007 S2000 costs $26? I can find them here with under 100,000 miles for under $20k. I’m going to start buying them and reselling them where you are.

The 996 would place very highly mostly due to depreciation.

I did consider a 996 and I wrote about it in The Almost 911

I found all of these prices on CarMax and linked to them in the table. And you’re correct that you can find much lower priced S2000 and Carmax does tend to be priced higher. But all the ones I saw for less than $20K were all questionably modified.

Yeah, realized the vitals are the same as the Cayman, so it’s kind of a question of whether you can get a good car (e.g. mileage) for any significant savings.

The real bargain Porsche is the 986. Less power but monstrous depreciation you can find decent ones on CL for under seven grand all day long.

Ah Carmax makes sense - and makes it a fair comparison. I’ve seen quite a few stock S2000's on Craigslist and at local dealers. There are obviously quite a few with questionable mods, but good ones are mixed in. Maybe I’m just lucky here.

True, but the performance and status is nothing remotely similar to the rest in the comparison here. The 996 could break through a 1/4 in the low-mid 13's, the 986 was in the mid-high 14's.

Agreed, but that is the fun of armchair racing! All kinds of odd match ups :)
